Running a business that serves you - It's all about balance

If you started your business with this thought: "I want more control over my life."

But now you're thinking this: "Oh my god, there's so much to do and so little time."

You might have bit off more than you can chew BUT there is light at the end of the tunnel.

In this post, I'll explore a few key ways you can get your business back on track, back under control, and breathe balance into your life.

I want to build a business that gives me more control

For some people, their business IS their life. I am not one of those people. I need my life to be about more than just what I do. I need sunsets. I need beach days. I need long walks and laughs with friends. I need board games and Nintendo and baking chocolate chip cookies at 9pm because why not?!

I also need creativity and exploration. I need to be able to make pretty pictures and deep dive into philosophical perspectives. I need to create worlds from my imagination.

AND I NEED MY BUSINESS.

(Not just for money).

I need it because it fills my heart with joy to be able to help small business owners set up their marketing plans and make true connections with their customers.

I need it because I love to work one on one with people and watch the way their lives change as a result of what I do.

For me, it's all about balance.

This is why I don't just help people with their actual marketing, I help with their mindset and the way they approach their business. Because and good marketing plan actually support creating a business that runs like a well-oiled machine.

Being a business owner isn't easy. It means wearing all (or most) of the hats.

I understand what it's like to be the maker of your goods and services, your customer service manager, your chief financial officer, your social media marketer, your sales and promotions marketer, and all the other things. I understand because I do all those things in my business, too, most of the time.

But doing ALL of the things ALL of the time means that you can end up overworked and burnt out. It also means spending hours and hours learning how to do things you could have hired someone else to do.

Remind yourself WHY you do what you do.

It can be really easy to get off track when we're running our own businesses.

We start our businesses for freedom and flexibility, for creativity and from passion. But then we are told all the things we "should" be doing and we feel like we need to do it all.

Take a moment, now and then, to check in with yourself.

Literally put it in your calendar.

Check in with yourself and ask yourself:

  • Why do I do what I do?

  • What kind of life am I trying to build?

  • Are there things I've taken on that I don't really need to do at all?

  • Am I investing my time or money into things that aren't paying off, just out of fear or a feeling of obligation?

  • Can I outsource anything or delegate to my team (if you have one)?

You don't need to manage your business alone. Bring in help when you need it.

Don't be afraid to outsource when you need to.

It can absolutely feel unnerving to bring on an assistant when you want to give yourself a raise.

But bringing in more hands allows you to to focus on the parts of your business that bring you joy. It also lets you stop worrying about learning things that are entirely outside your wheelhouse. Let the experts do what they do best.

It's all about balance.

But it isn't about finding a perfect balance.

It's about continually finding your way BACK to balance.
